My name is Emma, and in todays video I am going to teach you about power verbs and why you should be using them on your resume.

So this video is very, very good if you are looking for a job or even just looking to become a better communicator.

So, first of all, what is a power verb?

Well, I have here two examples of a weak verb and a power verb.

So, ” did” is an example of a weak verb.

And Ive put a sad face beside it.

These are the types of verbs that we dont really want to see on your resume because they dont sound strong.

They make you sound like a weak candidate.
它们会让你看上去像一个柔弱的应聘者。
Now, compare this to a word like ” implemented” .
现在，用一个单词实现来进行对比。
Youll notice the very happy face here.

” Implemented” is considered a power verb.
实现就可以看成是强代词。
When we hear this word, it makes us think of the candidate or the person looking for the job as a stronger person.

So, on your resume you want to use power verbs.

So I will teach you a whole bunch of different power verbs and we will go over many examples, but before I do that I just wanted to give a couple of pieces of advice about when you write your resume.

So, my first piece of advice, as Ive already said: Use power verbs.

My second piece of advice: Understand how to use the power verbs.

You dont want to make a mistake on your resume, and so you need to make sure that if you use a word like ” implemented” , you use it correctly.

Its very important that you use these words correctly and you know when to use it.
正确使用这些单词、什么时候用对你来说都很重要。
So make sure you understand the meaning totally before you use the word.

Maybe check with a dictionary, or if you have a friend maybe they can look at your resume, too.

This leads to my next point: No mistakes on your resume.

Your resume needs to be perfect.
你的个人简历要很完美。
If you have mistakes people will not want to hire you for a job.

So make sure that you check these power verbs for their spelling.

They should be spelt correctly, and make sure you check them for grammar mistakes.

You should look at it first, and then find a friend or a teacher to look at it after you do to make sure theres no mistakes.

Okay, the next piece of advice I have for you is: Be specific on your resume.

So when we are using power verbs, for example, I have here a power verb ” increased” .

Okay?

” Increased gross sales by 4%.” So you might see this on a resume.
销售额增长了4%。你可能会在个人简历中见到过。
And now, how is it specific?
如何才算具体呢？
Well, I say specifically what Ive done.

So imagine I work for a company and I sell some sort of product.
想象一下我在一家公司打工，卖某些种类的商品。
This is what I did, I increased gross sales by 4%.
这就是我做过的，我让销售总额增长了4%。
So if you helped a certain number of people, you can write down that number.
如果你帮助过一定数量的人，你可以写下这个数字。
If you did something by a certain percentage, you can write that down.
如果你以某个比例做过某事，你可以写下来。
The more specific, the better.

Another thing to know about when you write a resume is in a lot of areas, especially under work summary, you will be using bullet points.

So, whats a bullet?

This is a bullet.

So these are all bullets.

Theyre just dots, and beside it we write what we did.
这些只是各种事件，在旁边我们会写下我们做过的事。
Another piece of advice is you should be using a lot of variety on your resume, especially with power verbs.
另一条建议是，你应该在个人简历中使用大量的多样化，特别是要用强代词来表达。
You dont want to keep using the same verb.
你不会想一直用一样的代词的。

So you do not want to write ” implemented” 10 times on your resume.
你不会在个人简历中想重复使用实施10次。
You want to show that you have a lot of different verbs you know how to use, so try to use variety.
你想展现你能用很多不同的代词来表达，尝试用多样化来表示。
Use: ” implemented” , ” initiated” , ” developed” .

Were going to look at a lot of different power verbs that you can use, so try to use a lot of different ones instead of the same one again and again and again.

Okay, and my final tip is about the grammar of power verbs.

Your resume, especially under work summary but also in other areas as well, we often use the past tense.

So a lot of the times you will see on a resume a bullet point with a verb in the past tense.
你在个人简历中能看到大量的时态表达，用代词过去式表达要点。
Often that means with ” ed” .
通常是在代词后加ed。
So if you used to work for a company in the past, you might say: ” Increased gross sales by 4%.” So you might use the past. . .
如果你曾在某家公司工作过，你可能会说：销售总额增长了4%，你可能会用到过去式……
The simple past tense.
很简单的过去式。
Youll also notice I dont write ” I” here.
你还可能注意到我没用第一人称表示。
I did not write: ” I increased” .
我并没有写我曾增加了。
A lot of the times on our resumes we do not use the subject, we do not use ” I” , we actually just write the verb.
我们个人简历中的大量时态表达都不用主语，我们不用第一人称，实际上我们只表达出了代词。
So youll see a lot of things like this: ” Increased gross sales by 4%.”
所以，你会看到很多人都这么些：销售总额增加了4%。
Now, if you still work for the same company. . . So imagine if I still work at a school, then instead of using the past tense I can use the present.
如果你还在那个公司工作……请想象一下，如果我还在学校工作，用一般现在时代替过去时。
So we use the past for previous or past work experience, but if youre still working at the same place you can use the present tense.
我们使用过去时表达之前或曾经的工作经历，但如果你还在原公司工作，你可以使用一般现在时。
So this is important, past or present tense, you can use both on your resume.
这很重要，过去时和一般现在时，你可以一并用在你的个人简历中。
So now lets look at some examples of power verbs and how to use them.

Okay, so lets look at the first set of power verbs.

So we have here the word ” did” or ” do” .
有一组单词曾做过或做。
And again, this is a pretty weak verb to use on your resume.

I would try to avoid it where possible.

And instead, I would use a power verb.
相反的，我会用到强代词。
So I have here just some power verbs that can mean the same thing as ” did” , although some of these have maybe additional meanings.
在此我有几个强代词来表示和曾做过有相同的含义，虽然这些强代词还有更多一层的含义。
So, again, its good to check your dictionary, but these are all somewhat synonyms of ” did” .
再说一遍，查字典是很不错的检查方法，这些都是曾做过的同义词。
So we have the word ” implemented” , and again, this is in the past tense.
我们可以用单词实施，用过去时态。
I have a bullet point here.
在此有一个要点。
I dont use the word ” I” , especially if its work summary.
我不用主语第一人称，特别是在工作摘要中。
And I wrote: ” I. . .” Or, sorry, I didnt write ” I” .
我以前这样写的：我…，抱歉，我没写过我…….
I wrote: ” Implemented a new system to better serve customers.” So this is an example of something I might write on my resume if it were true.
我写的是：实施一项新制度，更好的为客户提供服务。如果这句话正确，这就是一个写在我个人简历里很好的例子。
” Implemented” pretty much has the same meaning as ” created” or ” put into place” .
实施和创立或开展基本上有相同的含义。
So: ” I implemented a new system to better serve customers.” You might see something like that on a resume.
因此说：我实施了一项新制度，更好的为客户提供服务。你可能会在个人简历中看到这样的表达。
We have another power verb: ” handle” .
还有另一个强代词：操控。
Okay?
懂了吗？
” Executed” , ” carried out” , ” processed” , ” initiated” , ” facilitated” , ” conducted” .
执行、开展、加工、启动、促进、传导。
These are all very strong words that are similar to ” did” and can, depending on the sentence youre writing, can possibly create the word ” did” .
这些都是很强劲的代词，与曾做过表达相似，根据不同句子，你可以写下这些单词，从而表达曾做过的意思。
Okay?
清楚了么？
So, again, use a dictionary to make sure that your sentence makes sense for what youre trying to say.
再说一遍，用字典检查你的句子，让你想要表达的东西更有意义。
But these are all great power verbs to use on a resume.
这些都是用在个人简历中的强代词。
One other thing I wanted to say, again, is youll notice most of these have ” ed” .
另外我还想说的是，你会注意到这些代词都加上了ed。
So we often use the past tense, as I said before, on our resume.
我们常常在个人简历中会用到过去时，正如我之前说过的。
But if we are still doing something, its a part of the job were doing now, we can actually use the present tense, so in this case an ” s” .
但如果你还在做某事，这件事正好是你正在做的一部分工作，实际上就可以用一般现在时，在这种情况下就加上s。
So, for example, imagine if I handle customer complaints.
例如，想象一下如果你在处理客户投诉。
I can write on my resume: ” Handles customer complaints” or ” Handles refunds” .
我可以在个人简历中这样写：处理客户投诉或办理退款。
Okay?

So these are all great power verbs to use.
这都是强代词的用法。
Now lets look at some other ones that are great for your resume.
让我们看一下其它对你个人简历有很大帮助的词汇。
Okay, so we have another weak verb: ” made” or ” make” that many students might want to use on a resume.
好吧，还有另外一个弱代词：做过或做，许多同学可能都会用在个人简历中的。
This is not a good verb to use on a resume.
这个单词用在个人简历里并不好。
Instead, we have a lot of different synonyms or things that mean similar to ” make” or are very close in meaning that are power verbs and better to use.
相反的，我们能用大量不同的同义词，都类似于做，或者意思十分接近的强代词来进行更好的表达。
So we have: ” developed” , we have ” produced” , ” devised” , ” formulated” , ” established” , ” created” , ” fostered” , and this one ” designed” .
可以用：发展、生产、发明、制定、确立，创造、培养和设计。
Here I actually have an example of how we would use a power verb on our resume.
在此，我举了一个将强代词用在个人简历中的例子。
So we might say something like: ” Designed PowerPoint presentations on best customer service practices.” , ” Designed PowerPoint presentations for our weekly meeting.” Okay?
我们还能这样说：曾设计过优秀的客户服务实践方面的PPT，曾为周例会设计过PPT。懂了吗？
So theres many things you can use with all of these things. . .
有很多词汇你都可以用在这上面……
Or with all of these verbs, but again, try to use power verbs wherever you can.
利用这些代词，再说一次，尝试在可能会用到的地方来使用强代词。
Okay, so our next verb is ” help” .
下一个代词是帮助。
” Help” is okay to use on a resume, but you know, again you want variety on your resume so there are some power verbs that can really help you with this.
帮助可以用在个人简历中，但是你知道嘛，你想在个人简历中表现出多样化，有一些强代词能真正的帮助到你。
” Assisted” is great.
协助就很不错。
So a lot of the times at work you assist people in different jobs or projects.
在工作中你用大量时间来帮助他人进行不同的工作或工程。
In this case Ive given the example: ” Assisted veterinarians in the care of animals.” ” Aided” , ” demonstrated” , ” provided” .
在这种情况下，我给出一个例子：帮助兽医进行动物护理。帮助、示范、提供。
And again, there are many more.
此外还有很多单词。
These are just an example of some of the power verbs you can use.
这只是一个能用到强代词的例子。
Okay, next up we have ” led” .
接下来，来说下指引。
So, again, ” led” is also okay to use on a resume, but if youre looking for variety and you want something more than just ” led” . . .
指引也可以用在个人简历中，但如果你想要多样化，你不会只想用到指引的……
And ” led” is pretty much ” lead” , its the past tense of ” lead” , so this is for anyone who is a leader in their place of work or a boss, or they have people who work for them.
指引过就是指引的过去时态，这个词描述了某个工作领域中的领导或老板，或者有一帮人为他打工的人。
You can use these verbs.
你可以用这些代词。
So we have: ” managed” , ” coordinated” .
还有：管理，协调。
I really like ” coordinated” .

This is a very, very common one to use on resumes.
这在个人简历中是非常非常常用的。
” Supervised” , ” oversaw” .
监督，监视。
In this case I have the example: ” Oversaw the daily operations of a nuclear power plant.” Okay?

We have: ” spearheaded” and ” directed” .
还有带头和引领。
So just some examples of power verbs that look great on your resume.
这些强代词的例子会让你的个人简历看上去更好。
Now lets look at some more.

So, ” researched” is a great word and there are a lot of power verbs that also are similar to ” research” .
那么，研究是很好的单词，还有大量的强代词类似于研究。
We have ” analyzed” .
有分析。
In this case Ive given an example: ” Analyzed trends and reported on opportunities for growth.” A lot of what we do at work is analyzing, so ” analyzed” is a great one for your resume.
在这种情况下我给出个例子：分析机遇增加的趋势和报告。我们在工作中做的很多的都是分析，分析就是个可以用在个人简历中很好的单词。
” Diagnosed” , ” measured” .
诊断，衡量。

So, again, there are tons of power verbs.

These are just a couple of examples.

For ” organized” .
对于这个词组织。
A lot of the times on resumes were talking about how we organize something, so we can say: ” maintained” .
我们会在个人简历中多次描述我们对某些事如何进行组织的，这样我们就可以说成：维护。
In this case: ” Maintained a database for over two thousand customers.” And, again, notice how specific I am being.
这样一个例子：维护一个两千多客户的数据库。注意下我说得有多具体。
Okay?

” Arranged” , another word that has to do with organization.
安排，另一个必须与组织相关的工作。
” Communicated” is also a great verb to use, and there are a lot of ways to say ” communicated” .
沟通也是一个不错的代词，有很多方式来表达沟通。
The problem is on a resume we often use the word ” communicate” , so its good to have a lot of power verbs that have similar meanings.
问题是在个人简历中我们经常使用沟通，使用大量的强代词来表达相近的含义是不错的方法。
I have ” collaborated” : ” Collaborated with other departments on special projects.” , ” Collaborated with a team of, you know, 20 people on this project for my company.” Okay?
还有合作：在特殊的项目中与其它部门进行合作。和一个团队进行合作，是公司为此项目组建的20人的团队。懂了吗？
So, ” collaborate” is a very good verb to use.
协助也是很好用的代词。
” Reported” , ” highlighted” .
报告，高亮。
So these all have to do with communication and there are many more.
这些都是必须含有沟通和其它环节。
Now lets look at some power verbs that have to do with getting results.
现在让我们看关于为达到某些目的而必须要做的几个强代词。
Okay, so if you have done something at your work where youve gotten results, where youve improved the company in some way, or where youve increased sales, or youve done something and youve accomplished something, this is very good to mention in your resume.
好的，如果你在工作中做了某些事，达成了某些目的，在某些方面提升了公司能力或增加了公司的销售额，或者说，你做的一些工作、完成的一些事很有益，可以体现在你的个人简历中。
So next were going to look at some English for that.
接下来，我们就要看一些关于这方面的词汇。
So we have: ” Got results” .
可以说：得到了结果。
This isnt really a good way to phrase what were talking about.
这不是一个表达我们要探讨内容的好方式。
Its better to use a power verb.
用强代词会更好。
Okay?

So if you increased business, you can say that: ” Increased gross sales by 4%.” , ” generated” : ” Generated some new business for the company.” , ” Identified new markets” , ” strengthened” .
如果你提升了业务，你可以说：提升了4%的营业总额，产生：为公司创造了一些新的业务，确定了新的市场，增强。
Maybe you strengthened the relationship between your store and another store.
你也可能已经增进了和其它商店的关系。
” Improved” , ” accomplished” .

So these are very, like, great power verbs to use on your resume.

For some of you, maybe you used some sort of machinery at work.
对于你们当中的某些人来说，可能在工作中使用过某些设备。
So, ” used” is a weak verb, just like ” did” and ” make” .
使用是一个弱代词，就像做过和用到一样。
There are way better power verbs to use.
可以使用更好的强代词。
And the one Im going to leave you with today is ” operated” .
今天最后一个我要讲的是运行。
A lot of the times when were talking about machines we use the word ” operated” .
当我们在谈论使用过的设备时，我们总是用运行。
So maybe you operate a forklift, or maybe you operate heavy machinery or some other type of, you know, device.
你可能会用叉车，或者是重型机械以及其它类型设备。
So I can say: ” Operated forklifts following best safety practices.” So this is an example of what maybe a construction worker would use on their resume.

So weve gone over some power verbs, but there are a lot.
